China train tickets on 12306 — your passport is your ticket

China's high-speed trains are the best way to cross the country, and the official 12306 app — which has a full English version — is the only channel with no booking fee. The system has one learning curve: register and verify your passport once, learn the 15-day release rhythm, and after that your passport itself is the ticket at every gate. This page walks the whole thing.

Official channel12306 — official app "Railway 12306" (full English version) or 12306.cn / the English site
Tickets released15 days before departure (the presale window includes the travel day)
Release timeEach departure station has its own daily release time — check yours in the app
DocumentsPassport; online real-name verification in the app (station window as backup, one-time)
PassengersAdd companions to your account's passenger list — each must pass verification; book everyone in one order to sit together
EntryPassport at the station gate — no paper ticket to collect

On ordinary days, most routes have seats for days. On Fridays, Sundays, holidays and above all during the Spring Festival travel rush, popular trains sell out within minutes of release. If your date is fixed and the route is popular, book at release time on day one of the window.

  1. Download "Railway 12306" and switch the app language to English (Settings → Language).
  2. Register with your passport number and the name exactly as in the machine-readable zone. Complete real-name verification online — if it fails, verify once, in person, at any station ticket window with your passport.
  3. Add your travel companions under "Passengers" and let each one verify — do this days ahead, not on release morning.
  4. Fifteen days out, search your route, pick the train and class (Second Class is comfortable; First and Business are upgrades), choose seats where offered, and book everyone in one order to sit together.
  5. Pay within the short payment window — the seat is only yours once paid. Alipay or WeChat Pay with your linked foreign card is the most reliable route.

Pitfalls

On the day: arrive at the station 45–60 minutes before departure. Go through security, find your train on the departure board, and at the gate scan your passport — most gates read passports directly; if yours does not, staff at the manual channel beside the gates will check it. Keep the passport handy: it is checked again on board and sometimes at the arrival gate.

12306 FAQ

My passport verification keeps failing in the app. Now what?

Double-check the name format first — exactly as in the passport's machine-readable zone, including middle names. If online verification still fails, do it once in person at any station ticket window with your passport; after that, your account is verified for good.

The train I want is sold out. Is it over?

Not necessarily. Use 12306's waitlist: it automatically books and charges you if seats free up from cancellations, and it works surprisingly often. Also check nearby departure times and the city's other stations — and one day earlier or later.

Do I need to print anything?

No. There is no paper ticket to collect: your booking lives against your passport number, and the station gates scan the passport itself. Keep the physical passport in hand — a photo of it will not open the gate.
